The place name "Lythe" is derived from 'hlith' - meaning "the slope" or "slope" in Old Scandanavian, the language of the Vikings which was a combination of of Old Danish and Old Norse.
Lythe is on the main road from Saltburn to Whitby, (A174), & amenities available include a public house, a Church (St Oswald with Ugthorpe C of E), a post office, a fire station, and some shops.
The prefix of the Post Code for Lythe is YO21-3.
The ancesteral seat of Lord Normanby, The Mulgrave Estate stretches several miles to the South and West.
The old Red Lion public house has recently been renamed The Stiddy. A "stiddy" is an anvil packed full of gunpowder and fired like a cannon on special occasions, such as the birth of the Marquess' male heir, the jubilee, or the end of the Second World War.
