A small Hamlet now, it was, less than a century ago a thriving business centre.

Less than a century ago Houlsyke was part of a thriving business centre. The area at that time was a well known for it's pig rearing and the centre for this activity was Houlsyke. Pigs were reared, killed, and cured before being transported to Whitby by horse drawn wagons. Sheep and Wool products were also traded here as well.

Houlsyke The Hamlet supported a Public House known as 'The Fat Ox' and also had a carpenter's shop. The Fat Ox is now an ordinary house.
